Accident (Yi Ngoi)

user posted image

Dir. Soi Cheang. Hong Kong, China, 2009, 86 mins.

Accident is a tricksy, fantastical Hong Kong hit-man film from Soi Cheang and the Milkyway Creative Team, produced by Johnnie To and bearing all the hallmarks of that label. Kicking off with an impressively well-edited sequence which will ensure audiences never view an accident in quite the same way again, its three main set pieces are enough to see this film break out in Asian markets and be a strong ancillary performer for Media Asia – even if they ultimately become mired in something of a narrative fog.

Running to a snappy 86 minutes, Accident is anchored by its three pieces and easily the most impressive is the opener, set in the busy streets of Hong Kong where a driver is stuck in traffic. A thoroughly enjoyable, high-impact sequence of events follows in which a chain of seemingly accidental occurrences lead to his death with shards of glass impaled in his neck.

This was no ordinary man, however, but a Triad boss, however, and his death was no accident. The Brain (Louis Koo) and his team – consisting of Uncle (Feng Tsiu-fan), Fatty (Lam Suet) and a nameless character played by Michelle Ye – are hitmen with unblemished records who specialise in making their assassinations look like complete accidents. It’s established early on that The Brain is unhealthily paranoid, however, even bugging his own team HQ.

As they go about setting up their next hit – another great sequence involving tramtracks and a wheelchair-bound old man - things start to go spectacularly wrong. Brains is convinced that somebody has taken a hit out on him, firstly suspecting his team members, and then an accountant Fong (Richie Jen) whom he ultimately believes to be behind it all.

Accident is – unsurprisingly, given its pedigree - far more successful and sure-handed when it comes to the action elements, but much footage of Brains’ paranoia and Koo’s stiff-jawed depiction of the hitman can allow the tension to leak. Notably, this is a Hong Kong actioner with no guns and gore is kept to a minimum.

Stylistically, Cheang is a less-flashy operator than his mentor To, using a lot of available light and evidently shooting on the hoof in crowded cityscapes. He turns in some very attractive work, especially in the night sequences, and action involving an eclipse. The soundtrack lends a jazzy mood to the proceedings.

Last night (09/08), producer Johnnie To, director Soi Cheang, 'Accident' cast including Richie Ren, Michelle Ye, Han Yuqin, Lam Suyt and Louis attended the movie premiere in Hong Kong. Talking about the film at the Venice Film Festival, Louis expressed his hope to have the opportunity to win the honor for Hong Kong. Louis also revealed that during the long period of time shooting this film, he was also making several other films. And that made him feel a little bit 'schizophrenic', so he had to rely on listening to music beforehand to clear his mind in order to get into his roles.

Starred in several films this year, all are well received by both critics and moviegoers. With emotion, Louis shared that he has most fun this year. In the past few years, Louis has all along worked hard to polish his acting, and now finally has paid off. Louis is very pleased.

'Accident' And Its Stars Scored High Points At Venice Film Festival

user posted image

With clever story structure, exquisite footage and excellent performances from its stars, 'Accident' won the admiration from European audience, particularly media outlets. They gave the movie a pretty high mark, received 31/2 out of 5 stars from media and 7.2 out of 10 points from online rating, ranked at 7th place. The highest point belonged to 'Life During Wartime' with 4 stars and 8.09 points. The other Chinese-language film 'Prince of Tears' was in the bottom pack, scored only 21/2 stars from Italy media but only 2 stars from other outlets and 4.71 points online rating, just merely escaped the last place.

Michelle Ye and Louis were highly praised for their acting skills and commented as the golden couple, a perfect combination on silver screen. The critics and fans were convinced Louis will be the heavyweight candidate for the best leading actor award. Michelle Ye was seen as a pleasant surprise and they titled her as 'Asian Goddess'. It's reported that many Hollywood film companies intend to purchase the film copyright to make a remake, following the movie 'Infernal Affairs' that won the glory for the Chinese-language film years ago.

Many also predicted that 'Accident' and its stars Michelle Ye and Louis will be hot candidates for the upcoming year Hong Kong Film Awards and this golden couple will become the backbone of the future status of Hong Kong cinema.
